Syvyysverkkoja, or the deep web, refers to parts of the World Wide Web that are not indexed by standard search engines. This means that content on the deep web cannot be found through a simple search query on sites like Google or Bing. Accessing the deep web typically requires specific credentials or direct navigation.

The deep web encompasses a vast range of information. This includes everyday online services that require a login, such as email accounts, online banking portals, cloud storage, and subscription-based content. Databases, private company intranets, and academic journals that are not publicly accessible also form a significant portion of the deep web. The size of the deep web is estimated to be much larger than the surface web, which is the portion indexed by search engines.

While the term "deep web" is sometimes conflated with the "dark web," they are not the same. The dark web is a small subset of the deep web that is intentionally hidden and requires specialized software, configurations, or authorization to access. It is often associated with anonymity and can be used for both legitimate and illicit activities. The vast majority of the deep web, however, consists of perfectly ordinary and legal content that is simply not meant for public indexing.
