Systemopdeling, or system decomposition, is the process of dividing a complex system into smaller parts or subsystems to improve manageability and design quality. The concept is central in software engineering, information systems, and hardware design, and can also apply to organizational structures. By breaking a system into distinct units, teams can work more independently and interfaces between parts become explicit.

Key goals include improved maintainability, scalability, and testability; easier parallel development; easier reuse of components; and clearer boundaries that limit ripple effects when changes occur. A well-executed systemopdeling enhances modularity, supports evolution, and helps address non-functional requirements such as security and reliability.

Common approaches include functional decomposition and architectural decomposition. Architectural styles such as layered, client–server, microservices, and domain-driven design guide how subsystems relate and communicate. Concepts like cohesion, coupling, information hiding, and well-defined interfaces (contracts) help ensure that modules can be developed, tested, and replaced with minimal impact on others.

The process typically involves requirements clarification, defining system boundaries, identifying subsystems, assigning responsibilities, and designing interfaces and data/control flows. It also requires governance over standards, versioning, and integration strategies. Challenges include coordination overhead, performance trade-offs, data consistency across subsystems, and the difficulty of maintaining a coherent overall architecture as the system evolves.
