Synnyttäminen, also known as childbirth or labor, is the process by which a fetus is expelled from the uterus out of the body. This complex biological event involves a series of physiological changes that prepare the mother's body for delivery and the newborn for life outside the womb. The process typically begins with labor, characterized by uterine contractions that gradually dilate and efface the cervix. Labor is often divided into distinct stages. The first stage, labor, involves cervical changes and can be further subdivided into latent and active phases. The second stage, pushing, begins when the cervix is fully dilated and ends with the birth of the baby. The third stage involves the delivery of the placenta, also known as the afterbirth.

Throughout pregnancy, hormonal shifts prepare the body for childbirth. Oxytocin plays a crucial role in initiating and coordinating uterine contractions. Various methods are available to manage the pain associated with labor, including pharmacological options like epidurals and non-pharmacological approaches such as breathing techniques, massage, and water immersion. The location of birth can vary, with common options including hospitals, birth centers, and home births, each offering different levels of medical support and personal choice. Postpartum, the mother's body undergoes a period of recovery known as the postpartum period or puerperium, during which the uterus returns to its pre-pregnancy size and other physiological adjustments occur.
