A syftesformulering typically includes a main objective, possible sub-goals, the intended scope (such as population, setting, and time frame), and sometimes the expected outcomes or success criteria. It functions as a compass for planning, data collection, analysis, and reporting, and it helps stakeholders understand what the work aims to accomplish.

When writing a syftesformulering, use clear, concrete verbs (for example undersøge, beskrive, evaluere, måle), state the desired outcome in specific terms, and indicate the context and limits. Prefer present tense and avoid vague language. Align the aim with the chosen methods and questions, and consider using SMART criteria: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

The syftesformulering is closely related to research questions and hypotheses but serves a broader orienting function. It may stand alone in a project proposal or thesis, and it is commonly refined as the design and understanding of the project develop.
