Sydänsyntyä is a Finnish term that translates to "heart birth" or "birth of the heart" in English. It refers to the developmental process of the heart in a human embryo. This intricate process begins very early in gestation, around the third week after fertilization. Initially, a region of specialized cells called the cardiac progenitor cells forms and begins to migrate towards the midline of the embryo. These cells then organize to create a primitive heart tube, which starts to beat spontaneously and circulate blood even before the heart is fully formed.

The heart tube undergoes a remarkable series of folding and remodeling events. It bends and twists upon itself, differentiating into the various chambers: the atria and ventricles, as well as the outflow and inflow tracts. Septa, or walls, gradually form to divide these chambers and separate the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. Critical structures like valves also develop during this period, ensuring the unidirectional flow of blood.

Sydänsyntyä is a highly sensitive period, and disruptions during this time can lead to congenital heart defects, also known as congenital heart disease. These are structural abnormalities of the heart present at birth. Factors such as genetic predisposition, maternal infections, certain medications, or exposure to environmental toxins can interfere with the normal development process.
