The primary goal of a sväljningsbedömning is to determine the presence, nature, and severity of dysphagia, identify potential causes, and guide the development of appropriate management strategies.

The assessment typically involves a multidisciplinary approach, often led by speech-language pathologists (talpedagoger) in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and dietitians. It usually begins with a thorough medical history review, focusing on symptoms, past medical conditions, and current medications. This is followed by a clinical or bedside swallowing evaluation, which involves observing the individual's ability to manage different food textures and liquids. This may include assessing oral motor skills, laryngeal elevation during swallowing, and the presence of coughing or choking.

These can include a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS), also known as a modified barium swallow, which uses X-rays to visualize the swallow, or a fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), which uses a flexible scope with a camera.
