Svartnivåer, often translated as "black levels," refers to the darkest tones a display device is capable of producing. It is a critical aspect of image quality, directly impacting contrast ratio and the perception of detail in dark scenes. A lower or deeper black level means the display can produce darker blacks, which in turn allows for a greater difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks on the screen. This increased contrast makes images appear more lifelike and three-dimensional.

Different display technologies have varying capabilities for achieving low black levels. OLED displays are generally considered superior in this regard because each pixel can be individually turned off, resulting in perfect blacks. In contrast, LCD displays rely on backlights, and even with advanced local dimming techniques, some light can leak through, preventing true black. The measurement of black level is typically done in nits (candela per square meter), with lower numbers indicating darker blacks.

Poor black levels can lead to several visual artifacts. "Crushed blacks" occur when details in dark areas are lost because they are rendered too dark. Conversely, "washed-out blacks" appear gray instead of black, reducing contrast and making the image appear flat. Achieving optimal black levels is crucial for accurate color reproduction and a satisfying viewing experience, especially in dimly lit environments or when watching content with significant dark portions.
