The length of a svarfrist is set by the issuer and varies by context; common ranges include a couple of weeks to several weeks, with 15, 30 or 60 days appearing in many proceedings. The counting starts on the date the recipient is informed or on the date stated in the document, and the document usually specifies whether the period is counted in calendar days or business days.

Extensions and flexibility are typical features. A recipient can often request more time, and authorities may grant an extension for legitimate reasons.
