suurformaatit

Suurformaatit, literally “large formats,” is a Finnish term used to describe imaging and printing formats that are larger than standard consumer media. It covers both large-format photography, where image capture is done on large sheets of film or sensors, and wide-format printing for reproductions and signage.

In photography, suurformaatit describes cameras that use large sheets of film or digital backs, with common sizes such as 4x5 inches, 5x7, 8x10 and bigger. Benefits include high resolution, broad tonal range, and movement capabilities for perspective control. They are favored for landscapes, architecture, and fine art, but they are heavy, costly, and slower to work with, and require careful focusing and handling.

In printing, suurformaatit refers to wide-format or grand-format printing, with outputs from about 60 cm (24 inches) wide to several meters. This segment uses inkjet or solvent-based inks on media like paper, vinyl, canvas, and fabric for posters, banners, exhibitions, wall coverings, and large reproductions. Workflows emphasize colour management, ICC profiles, and robust RIP software.

Historically, large-format imaging emerged in the 19th century with sheet-film cameras and glass plates; contemporary practice uses sheet film or digital backs. Large-format printing rose with advances in wide-format inkjet technology in the late 20th century, expanding capabilities for high-quality, large-scale visual communication.
