This process involves placing the material in a sealed vessel and then subjecting it to pressure. The pressure forces the treating solution, which typically contains preservatives, fire retardants, or other agents, deep into the material's cellular structure. This penetration is crucial for extending the lifespan and improving the performance of the treated substance.

The typical pressure treatment process for wood involves several stages. First, the wood is placed in a cylinder. Air is then removed from the cylinder and the wood cells, creating a vacuum. Following the vacuum, the treating solution is introduced into the cylinder, and pressure is applied. This pressure forces the solution into the wood. Once the desired amount of solution has been absorbed, the excess is removed, and a final vacuum may be applied to draw out any remaining free liquid.

This method is widely employed to protect wood from decay, fungal attacks, and insect infestations, making it suitable for outdoor applications like decking, fencing, and utility poles. The effectiveness of pressure treatment depends on factors such as the type of wood, the concentration of the treatment solution, and the pressure applied. The chemicals used are designed to be toxic to organisms that can degrade the material, thereby enhancing its durability and structural integrity against biological and environmental factors.
