Supergluer is a colloquial term referring to cyanoacrylate adhesives, commonly known by brand names like Super Glue. These are fast-acting, single-component adhesives that polymerize rapidly when exposed to moisture, forming strong bonds. The primary component of most cyanoacrylates is ethyl cyanoacrylate, although other esters like methyl cyanoacrylate are also used.

The adhesive works through an anionic polymerization process. Trace amounts of moisture on the surfaces to be bonded initiate the polymerization of the cyanoacrylate monomer. This reaction creates a chain-like polymer that forms a rigid plastic and effectively bonds the surfaces together. The speed of the reaction can be influenced by factors such as humidity, temperature, and the presence of certain activators or accelerators, which can be applied to speed up the bonding process.

Cyanoacrylates are known for their high tensile strength but relatively low shear and impact resistance. They are effective on a wide variety of materials including plastics, rubber, metal, wood, and ceramics. However, they are generally not suitable for porous materials or applications requiring flexibility, high temperatures, or prolonged exposure to water. Accidental bonding of skin or eyelids is a common hazard, typically resolved by gently peeling or rolling the bonded surfaces apart or by using acetone, which can dissolve the polymerized adhesive.
