Summaator, commonly known as an adder in English, is a device or circuit that computes the sum of two binary numbers. Summaators are fundamental components in digital electronics and form the arithmetic unit of calculators, processors, and signal-processing hardware.

The term summaator is used in several languages to describe both mechanical and electronic devices that add numbers. In the history of calculating, early adding machines implemented arithmetic through gears; in modern electronics, adders are implemented as digital circuits.

Mechanical sum units appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries with devices such as Pascal’s calculator and Leibniz’s stepped reckoner, evolving into more capable machines. The digital era introduced dedicated adder circuits in the 1950s and 1960s, enabling fast arithmetic in CPUs and other digital devices.

The basic building blocks are the half-adder, which adds two single bits and produces a sum and a carry, and the full-adder, which also incorporates a carry-in. By chaining full-adders, multi-bit adders such as ripple-carry adders can sum binary numbers word by word. More advanced designs, including carry-lookahead and carry-select adders, reduce propagation delay. For subtraction, adders operate on two’s complement representations, allowing a sum output to represent A minus B when negative values are encoded accordingly.

Summaators are used in virtually all digital devices that perform arithmetic, including central processing units, graphics processors, calculators, and digital signal processors. They are also adapted for multi-operand addition and for modular arithmetic in cryptographic and error-detection systems.
