Sulfonylfunktioner, also known as sulfonyl groups, are a functional group in organic chemistry characterized by a sulfur atom double-bonded to two oxygen atoms and single-bonded to two other substituents. The general formula for a sulfonyl group is R-SO2-R', where R and R' can be organic groups or hydrogen atoms. When both R and R' are organic groups, the compound is classified as a sulfone. If one of the substituents is a hydrogen atom, it is called a sulfonic acid, with the formula R-SO3H.

Sulfones are generally stable compounds with high boiling points due to the polarity of the S=O bonds and the possibility of dipole-dipole interactions. In pharmaceuticals, the sulfonyl group is a key component of sulfonamide drugs, a class of antibiotics that inhibit bacterial growth by interfering with folic acid synthesis. Sulfonic acids and their derivatives are used as catalysts, ion-exchange resins, and detergents. The chemistry of sulfonyl groups is diverse, with reactions often involving the sulfur atom or the carbon atoms adjacent to the sulfonyl group.
