In practice, sulfogrupper is often used as an umbrella label to discuss common patterns of sulfur–carbon connectivity rather than to designate a single distinct chemical entity.

Within this umbrella, several structural subclasses are sometimes discussed as examples of a sulfogrupper. These include sulfanyl or thioether linkages (R–S–R'), where sulfur bridges two carbon fragments; sulfinyl units (R–S(O)–R'), where sulfur bears one oxidized bond to oxygen; and sulfonyl units (R–S(O)2–R'), where sulfur is doubly oxidized and connected to two oxygen-containing groups. Each subclass exhibits different reactivity profiles, yet all share the central feature of sulfur bonded to carbon and to one or more substituents that influence stability and transformation.

Sulfogrupper is primarily a conceptual or pedagogical construct rather than a formally recognized chemical class. It is used to frame discussions of reactivity patterns such as C–S bond activation, leaving-group potential, or cross-coupling strategies, by focusing on the sulfur-centered linkage rather than on a single specific functional group. In established chemical nomenclature, these motifs are usually described by their specific names (thioether, sulfoxide, sulfone, etc.), with sulfogrupper serving as a provisional or comparative aid.
