subtoxic
Subtoxic is an adjective used in toxicology, pharmacology, and environmental science to describe exposure or effects that fall below the threshold for overt toxicity. A subtoxic exposure does not cause death, major organ failure, or severe dysfunction, but may produce sublethal effects such as altered metabolism, enzyme activity, oxidative stress, inflammation, or mild histopathological changes. Because toxicity thresholds vary by substance, organism, exposure duration, and endpoint, there is no universal numerical definition of subtoxic. The term is commonly used to distinguish low-dose effects from clearly toxic outcomes in both in vitro and in vivo studies.
In research, subtoxic doses are used to study safety margins, early biological responses, and mechanisms that
Interpreting subtoxic findings requires context, including the endpoint measured, exposure duration, route, and species. Subtoxic effects
