Subområden, or subareas, are subdivisions of a larger geographic or administrative area that are used for analysis, planning, and governance. They can be administrative units such as wards or districts, geographic units such as neighborhoods or ecological zones, or functional units defined by common characteristics like land use or population density. The concept helps organizations manage resources, monitor trends, and communicate data at a local level.

Boundaries of subområden can be formal, defined by law or administrative practice, or informal, based on practical considerations or data needs. Boundaries may be nested within larger regions and may change over time as populations shift or planning requirements evolve. Each subområde typically collects and reports indicators such as population, area, density, land use, income, education, or environmental metrics, enabling comparisons across subareas and over time.

Delineation methods include using existing administrative borders, creating statistical zones based on clustering of attributes, or combining both to reflect local conditions. Data standards and consistent definitions are important to ensure comparability, especially in national statistics, urban planning, and environmental monitoring.

In practice, subområden are used in many fields: urban planning to target services and infrastructure; regional statistics to present localized trends; environmental management to track habitat or land-use changes; and business analytics to map markets or customer segments. They can be revised as needs arise, but changes should be documented to maintain continuity.
