subglottalen, also written subglottic, refers to the anatomical region in the airway situated below the glottis and above the trachea. The glottis is the opening between the vocal cords, and the subglottic area lies between the lower margin of the vocal cords and the first tracheal ring. In humans, the subglottic space is a narrow segment of the larynx that plays a critical role in airway protection and voice modulation.

Anatomically, the subglottic region is bounded superiorly by the lower end of the epiglottis and inferiorly by the cricoid cartilage. It contains the subglottic membrane, a thin mucous covering that helps seal the airway during swallowing and coughing. The wall of the subglottic region is composed of cartilaginous tissue at the level of the cricoid and surrounding connective tissue that supports the airway lumen.

Clinical relevance of the subglottic area includes its involvement in several medical conditions. Subglottic stenosis, a narrowing of this segment, can be congenital or acquired and often causes airway obstruction and respiratory distress. This condition frequently results from prolonged intubation, caustic ingestion, or inflammatory diseases such as laryngotracheitis or sarcoidosis. The subglottic region is also a site of infection, with subglottic abscesses presenting with fever, sore throat, and otalgia. In the setting of caries in infants, subglottic infection may lead to septicemia.

Because of its limited diameter and proximity to the tracheal rings, surgical interventions in the subglottic area require delicate techniques. Treatments range from endoscopic dilation and laser therapy to open laryngotracheal reconstruction, depending on severity and chronicity. Understanding the anatomy and function of the subglottal region is essential for clinicians managing upper airway disorders, ensuring appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and airway management.
