Subdialects are subdivisions within a dialect, representing localized or socially defined varieties of a language that share core grammar and vocabulary with the parent dialect but exhibit distinct features. They exist along a continuum from broad regional forms to highly localized speech patterns.

Subdialects arise from geographic isolation, migration, contact with other languages, and social factors such as class, age, ethnicity, or occupation. They can coexist within a city or region and often change gradually rather than in clear steps. Subdialects differ from accents in that they include not only pronunciation but also distinct vocabulary, syntax, and sometimes morphology, even while remaining mutually intelligible with the parent dialect.
