Ställverket, in Swedish electrical terminology, refers to a switchyard or substation in an electric power system. It functions as a nexus where generation, transmission, and distribution meet, enabling the control, protection, and routing of high‑voltage power. The primary purpose is to transform voltages as needed, isolate faults rapidly, and maintain reliability and stability of the grid.

Typical equipment includes high‑voltage switchgear (comprising circuit breakers and disconnectors), transformers, busbars, and instrument transformers such as current and voltage sensors. Protection relays, control and communication systems, surge arresters, and grounding networks are integrated to monitor operation and trip circuits when faults occur. Substations may use gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) or air-insulated switchgear (AIS), and can be located indoors or outdoors depending on climate and space.

Structure and arrangement vary; common formats include single busbar, double busbar, and ring bus configurations, with layouts designed to minimize outage impact and facilitate maintenance. Substations may operate at transmission level (high/extra-high voltage) or distribution level, and can be connected to multiple networks or tie lines such as interties between regions.

Automation and standards play a key role. Many ställverk employ digital protection and control systems, often using IEC 61850 for inter-device communication and SCADA for remote monitoring. Safety regulations require adequate clearances, grounding, and protective interlocks to safeguard personnel and equipment.
