They translate the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the lateral movement needed to turn the wheels, and help set the wheel alignment, particularly the toe angle.

Construction and arrangement: A typical setup consists of inner tie rods attached to the steering rack and outer tie rods with ball joints connected to the steering knuckles. The two elements form an adjustable linkage whose length determines toe-in or toe-out. Materials are usually steel or alloy steel, with protective boots around the ball joints to keep dirt out and grease in. Many modern designs use sealed units that do not require periodic lubrication.

Function and operation: When the steering wheel is turned, the steering mechanism pushes or pulls the inner tie rods, which in turn move the outer tie rods and steer the wheels. The ability to adjust the tie rods’ length (or replace them as a unit) enables wheel alignment checks and corrections to maintain stable tracking and even tire wear.

Maintenance and wear: Inspect tie rods for torn boots, corrosion, bending, or play in the ball joints. Worn tie rods can cause steering looseness, wandering, or uneven tire wear. Some vehicles use serviceable joints, while others require replacement of the whole assembly.

Replacement and alignment: If tie rods are worn or damaged, they are replaced and the wheel alignment is rechecked and adjusted as needed. Severe damage may require related components such as the steering rack or knuckles to be serviced.
