Strømlekkasjer, often referred to as electrical leakage, occur when electrical current deviates from its intended path and flows through an unintended medium. This can happen due to damaged insulation, faulty wiring, or improper grounding. In simple terms, electricity is escaping where it shouldn't.

The primary risks associated with strømlekkasjer are electrical shock and fire. When a person comes into contact with a live conductor that has a leakage path to ground, current can flow through their body, causing injury or even death. Fire hazards arise because the leakage current can generate excessive heat in unintended areas, potentially igniting nearby flammable materials.

Several factors can contribute to strømlekkasjer. Aging insulation on wires can become brittle and crack, exposing the conductive material. Moisture is a significant enabler, as it can reduce the resistance of materials, making them more susceptible to current flow. Poorly maintained electrical equipment or accidental damage to cables can also create pathways for leakage.

Preventing strømlekkasjer involves regular inspection and maintenance of electrical systems. Ensuring that insulation is intact, connections are secure, and protective devices like residual-current devices (RCDs) are functional is crucial. RCDs are designed to detect small leakage currents and quickly interrupt the power supply, thereby mitigating the risk of shock and fire.
