Strapstropping is the practice of refining a blade edge by drawing the blade along a leather strap, or strop. It is commonly used for straight razors, knives, and swords, often as a finishing step after honing or sharpening to restore edge alignment and smoothness.

Historically associated with barbering and cutlery traditions, strapstropping provides a way to polish the edge and reduce micro-burrs without removing substantial metal. The method relies on the leather’s surface and, in some cases, on a fine abrasive paste or polishing compound applied to the strap to enhance the finishing effect.

Materials and configurations vary. Leather strops may be smooth or grain-side up and can be mounted in a stand, hung, or used as a hand-held strap. Some setups employ cloth-backed strops or double-strop arrangements for different finishes. Polishing compounds, pastes, or sprays are applied sparingly to achieve the desired level of refinement, with the choice of compound influencing the final edge feel and sheen.

Applications and considerations. Strapstropping is valued for its speed, portability, and ability to maintain a keen edge between more intensive sharpening sessions. It requires attention to edge geometry and consistent contact with the strap. Regular maintenance of the strop—keeping it clean, dry, and properly conditioned—helps preserve performance and prolongs the tool’s life.
