Strabismus, also known as crossed eyes or wall-eyes, is a condition where the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object. One eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward, while the other eye looks straight ahead. This misalignment can be constant or intermittent.

The causes of strabismus are varied and can include genetic factors, certain medical conditions like diabetes or brain injuries, and problems with the muscles that control eye movement. In some cases, it can be present from birth, while in others it may develop later in childhood or adulthood. It is estimated that between 2% and 5% of children experience some form of strabismus.

The consequences of untreated strabismus can be significant. If the brain receives two different images from each eye, it may suppress the image from the weaker or misaligned eye to avoid double vision. This suppression can lead to amblyopia, or lazy eye, where the vision in the affected eye does not develop properly, potentially resulting in reduced visual acuity that cannot be corrected with glasses alone.

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. They will assess visual acuity, eye alignment, and eye movement. Treatment options depend on the type and severity of strabismus and may include eyeglasses, vision therapy (eye exercises), or surgery to correct the muscle imbalance. Early detection and intervention are crucial for achieving the best possible visual outcome.
