Stillingstider is a term used in human resources and workforce planning to denote the amount of time assigned to a particular job position within an organization. It represents how long a position is staffed and contributes to the organization’s capacity, and is usually expressed as hours per week or as a full-time equivalent (FTE).

Use and purpose: Organizations use stillingstider in budgeting, staffing plans, and payroll to determine staffing levels, scheduling needs, and compensation. It is related to, but not identical with, actual working time (arbejdstid). Stillingstider specify the planned staffing obligation of a position, whereas arbejdstid records the time employees are on duty, including breaks and overtime.

Calculation and examples: A standard full-time position is often defined by local norms, commonly around 37.5 to 40 hours per week. If a role is scheduled for 15 hours per week, its stillingstider is 0.4 FTE. In shift-based environments, the stillingstider reflects the total scheduled hours across all shifts for that position.

Variations and context: The concept and its details vary by country, sector, and collective agreements. Some organizations express stillingstider as annual hours rather than weekly hours. It often interacts with stillingsprocent (the share of a full-time position) and with policies on vacation, benefits, and overtime.
