stigbreyting
Stigbreyting (literally "step change") is a term used in historical phonology, particularly in Nordic linguistic traditions, to describe a stepwise or staged change in a language’s sound system. Rather than a single abrupt reorganization, stigbreyting refers to a sequence of phonetic or phonological adjustments that proceed through intermediate states over time.
Mechanisms and pattern: The process can involve vowels, consonants, or both and is often discussed in relation
Illustrative example: Consider a hypothetical stigbreyting in a vowel system, where a high front vowel /i/ shifts
Relation to other concepts: Stigbreyting is closely related to, but distinct from, general notions of chain
