Stigbreyting (literally "step change") is a term used in historical phonology, particularly in Nordic linguistic traditions, to describe a stepwise or staged change in a language’s sound system. Rather than a single abrupt reorganization, stigbreyting refers to a sequence of phonetic or phonological adjustments that proceed through intermediate states over time.

Mechanisms and pattern: The process can involve vowels, consonants, or both and is often discussed in relation to chain shifts, where a set of sounds shifts in connected steps to preserve or restructure phonemic contrasts. Triggering factors include phonetic environment, assimilation pressures, and sociolinguistic influences that promote gradual, accumulative change. Evidence is typically drawn from diachronic data, such as comparative cognates and historical texts, which show a progression of intermediate stages.

Illustrative example: Consider a hypothetical stigbreyting in a vowel system, where a high front vowel /i/ shifts toward [e] in an early stage. In a subsequent stage, /e/ itself shifts to [ɛ], and adjacent vowels adjust their values to maintain contrasts. The outcome is a reorganized vowel inventory achieved through discrete steps rather than an instantaneous reconfiguration.
