It encompasses sterilizing-grade filters intended to retain bacteria and other viable contaminants while allowing the filtered fluid or gas to pass. Sterilfilter products are used across pharmaceutical, biotechnological, clinical, and food and beverage applications to support aseptic processing and product safety.

Most sterilizing filters employ membranes with pore sizes around 0.2 to 0.22 micrometers, although other configurations exist for inline, capsule, or syringe-type formats. Common membrane materials include polyethersulfone (PES), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), cellulose acetate, and mixed cellulose ester (MCE), each offering different chemical compatibility and flow characteristics. Filters may be pre-sterilized by gamma irradiation or ethylene oxide, or they can be made for aseptic-entry handling and subsequent sterilization.

Operation and validation rely on proper installation, pre-treatment where needed, and routine integrity checks. Integrity testing often includes bubble point tests or forward-flow air leak tests, supported by microbial challenge validation demonstrating significant retention of test organisms. Regulatory guidance from pharmacopeias and quality systems (GMP, ISO 13485) governs qualification, lot traceability, and periodic verification to ensure consistent performance.

Applications and limitations: Sterilfilters are used to sterilize heat-sensitive liquids, media, solutions, and certain gases in manufacturing, research, and clinical settings. They are effective against bacteria and particulates but may not remove all viruses; for viral clearance, additional or different filtration approaches may be required. Material compatibility, potential extractables, and filter fouling are considered in selection. Proper storage, handling, and replacement schedules are essential to maintain efficacy.
