Stepsanding is a technique used in woodworking and other crafts to achieve a smooth finish on a workpiece. It involves a systematic process of sanding with progressively finer grits of abrasive material. The goal is to remove the scratches left by the previous, coarser grit, gradually refining the surface until the desired smoothness is achieved.

The process typically begins with a coarser grit sandpaper, such as 80 or 100 grit, to remove rough material, tool marks, or imperfections. Once the surface is reasonably smooth, the user switches to a finer grit, like 120 or 150 grit, and sands again. Each subsequent step uses a sandpaper with a higher grit number, meaning the abrasive particles are smaller and more numerous. Common grits used in stepsanding include 180, 220, 320, and sometimes even finer grits like 400 or 600 depending on the application and the final finish desired.

It is important to sand in the direction of the wood grain. If cross-grain sanding occurs, it can leave visible scratches that are difficult to remove with finer grits. After each grit has been applied, it is often recommended to wipe the surface clean with a tack cloth or a slightly damp rag to remove dust before proceeding to the next finer grit. This ensures that the new grit is working on a clean surface and not just grinding away dust particles. Stepsanding is a fundamental technique for preparing surfaces for finishing, whether with paint, stain, oil, or varnish, as a smooth surface allows finishes to adhere evenly and achieve a professional appearance.
