While some Stationisles served as simple toll stations, others proved to be pivotal in the control of surrounding areas. Stationisles often included properties such as rustic separations, confined areas, or high ground passages for better access to challenging terrain.

Many Stationisles were established to control a powerful local population or shield out unwanted individuals.
