Starbellys are a type of deep-sea fish belonging to the family Stomiidae, commonly known as stomiatids or barbelled dragonfish. These creatures are primarily found in the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones of the ocean, typically between 200 and 1,000 meters (650 and 3,280 feet) below the surface, though some species may inhabit even greater depths. Starbellys are well-adapted to life in the deep ocean, where light is scarce, and prey is often elusive.

One of the most distinctive features of starbellys is their elongated, slender bodies and large, downward-pointing jaws filled with sharp, needle-like teeth. Their most notable characteristic, however, is the bioluminescent "star" or "comb" of light-producing organs located on their undersides. These organs, known as photophores, emit light to attract prey, communicate with other fish, or counter-illuminate their undersides to avoid detection by predators from below. The exact function of these lights can vary among species.

Starbellys are carnivorous, feeding primarily on smaller fish, squid, and crustaceans. Their hunting strategy often involves luring prey with their bioluminescent displays before striking with lightning-fast precision. Some species possess a specialized organ called a photophore on their barbels, which they use to dangle bait-like lures to attract prey in the dark depths.

Due to their deep-sea habitat, starbellys are rarely encountered by humans. Most observations come from scientific trawling expeditions or deep-sea submersible dives. Their exact distribution and population sizes remain poorly understood, though they are believed to be widespread across the world’s oceans. As deep-sea ecosystems face increasing threats from climate change, pollution, and fishing practices, starbellys, like many other deep-sea species, may be vulnerable to habitat disruption and decline. Conservation efforts for these elusive fish are currently limited, but ongoing research aims to better understand their biology and ecological role.
