While the word can refer to genealogies of people, it is most commonly associated with purebred animals, especially dogs and cats, and with livestock registries. A stamtavle lists ancestors across generations to establish ancestry and breed legitimacy.

Contents: The document typically names each ancestor, along with birth dates, registration numbers, and the relationship to the subject (sire, dam, grandsire, etc.). It often shows generation depth, breed or variety, color, and sex, and may include health clearances or DNA results. Some stamtavler also record breeder information, place of origin, and show or breeding eligibility.

Purpose: A stamtavle is used to prove purebred status and to determine eligibility for registration, shows, and breeding programs. It supports genetic management by documenting lineage, helping assess risks of inherited conditions and guiding mating decisions.

Creation and authority: Stamtavler are issued by kennel clubs, breed registries, or stud books. Validity usually requires verification of parentage, sometimes supported by DNA testing. In modern practice, many registries maintain digital pedigrees in online databases; certificates may be issued as printed documents or digital records.

Limitations: A pedigree reflects recorded lineage and does not guarantee health, temperament, or performance. Errors or fraud can occur, and some lines may be incomplete due to unregistered ancestors or old registries.
