Stagehouses, also known as stage towers or fly towers, are an integral architectural component of many proscenium theaters. They are vertical spaces located above the stage area, extending significantly higher than the proscenium arch. The primary purpose of a stagehouse is to accommodate the rigging system that allows for the suspension and manipulation of scenic elements, lighting equipment, and other theatrical effects.

Within the stagehouse, a complex network of ropes, pulleys, counterweights, and motorized hoists is typically installed. This system, often referred to as the "fly system," enables stagehands to "fly" scenery in and out of view from above the stage. This allows for quick and seamless scene changes, creating dramatic visual effects and enhancing the storytelling capabilities of a production. The height of the stagehouse directly correlates to the volume of space available for raising and lowering these suspended elements.

Beyond the functional aspects of the fly system, stagehouses also house additional lighting instruments, sound equipment, and sometimes even additional performance space known as the "fly loft" or "grid." The grid is the uppermost level of the stagehouse, a platform that provides access for technicians to manage the rigging. The design and dimensions of a stagehouse are crucial considerations in the overall planning and construction of a theater, impacting its versatility and the scope of productions it can accommodate.
