Stadspoorten are the gates that formed the entrances to historic walled cities in Europe, with a particular prevalence in the Low Countries. They were part of city defenses, designed to control access, protect inhabitants, and regulate trade and movement along important routes. A stadspoort typically consisted of a gate passage, often flanked by one or more towers or gatehouses, and connected to surrounding walls or fortifications. The architectural styles of stadspoorten reflect the period in which they were built, spanning Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque influences, and they frequently carried coats of arms, inscriptions or decorative sculptures.
