Stabilityaffect is a term used to describe the coupling between affective states and the stability of a system. It denotes how emotions, moods, or arousal levels among agents influence the dynamic behavior of a system, and how the system’s conditions—such as feedback, workload, or perturbations—influence those affective states. The concept is used across disciplines including psychology, organizational studies, human-computer interaction, and complex-systems research to explain how mood and emotion can stabilize or destabilize collective dynamics.

Theoretical framework: Stabilityaffect models treat affect as a time-varying variable that modulates action tendencies, attention, and coordination. Positive or high-arousal states may enhance coordination and stabilize interactions in some tasks, while negative affect or fatigue may increase variability or trigger destabilizing responses. Conversely, system stability can buffer negative affect or, under certain conditions, create disinhibition or complacency that reduces resilience to disturbance.

Measurement and methods: researchers assess affect with self-report scales, physiological indicators, or inferred behavioral cues, and assess stability with metrics such as variance over time, rate of recovery after perturbations, or dynamical-system measures like Lyapunov exponents. Analyses commonly combine time-series data, agent-based modeling, and control-theory approaches to simulate feedback loops between affect and stability.

Applications: durability of human-robot collaboration, adaptive user interfaces that respond to affect, organizational stress and process stability, and crowd-management scenarios.

Limitations: the term lacks universal consensus and standardized measurement; findings are context-dependent; ethical considerations arise when manipulating affect or using affective data.
