Stabilizers, known in Estonian as stabiilsusvahendid, are substances added to materials or systems to prevent or counteract undesirable changes, such as degradation, decomposition, or unwanted reactions. Their primary function is to maintain the stability and integrity of a product or process over time and under various conditions.

In the context of polymers, stabilizers are crucial for preventing degradation caused by factors like heat, light (UV radiation), and oxidation. Without stabilizers, plastic products would quickly become brittle, discolor, and lose their mechanical properties. Antioxidants are a common type of stabilizer that interrupts the free radical chain reactions responsible for oxidative degradation.
