One prominent approach is the Grammar-Translation Method, which emphasizes direct instruction in grammar rules and vocabulary, often with a focus on translating between the target language and the native language. This method aims for accuracy and a deep understanding of linguistic structures.

In contrast, the Direct Method advocates for teaching the target language exclusively, without using the native language. Emphasis is placed on oral communication, with new concepts introduced through demonstration and visual aids.

The Audiolingual Method, popular in the mid-20th century, relies heavily on drills, repetition, and habit formation. It aims to develop automatic responses in the target language through extensive practice of dialogues and sentence patterns.

More contemporary approaches include Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), which prioritizes the development of communicative competence. The focus is on using the language for meaningful communication in real-life situations, with grammar and vocabulary learned as needed to support these interactions. Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is a subset of CLT where learning is organized around the completion of meaningful tasks.

Other approaches may include Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), where subjects are taught through a foreign language, or approaches that leverage technology and digital resources for language acquisition.
