Spinsanionen are a proposed class of negatively charged chemical species characterized by unpaired electron spins localized on or distributed over an anionic framework. The term combines spin and anion and is used in discussions of spin chemistry and molecular magnetism to designate radical anions whose magnetic properties arise from their electronic structure rather than from their cationic partners. In typical spinsanionen, the unpaired electron density is delocalized over a conjugated π-system or localized on a metal–ligand core, leading to paramagnetism with a doublet or higher spin multiplicity.

Formation and stabilization: Spinsanionen can form by one-electron reduction of suitable neutral radicals or by electrochemical reduction of precursors in solution or solid-state devices. Stabilization is achieved by delocalization of spin density, steric protection by bulky substituents, coordination ligands, or entrapment in cryogenic matrices or ionic liquids to suppress dimerization and side reactions.

Characterization: Detection relies on electron spin resonance (ESR/EPR) spectroscopy, which reports g-values and hyperfine couplings; UV-Vis spectroscopy often reveals radical transitions; magnetic susceptibility measurements inform on spin ground state and coupling. Computational studies (density functional theory) help map spin density and predict stability.

Representative systems: Organic spinsanionen include polycyclic radical anions with extensive π-delocalization; inorganic/metal–organic analogs with oxide or nitrosyl centers have been studied in model systems. Reactivity is governed by spin conservation and potential spin–spin interactions in aggregates.

Applications and outlook: Research explores potential roles in molecular magnets, spintronic devices, and quantum information, but practical use is limited by stability and sensitivity to environment. Ongoing work aims to expand the library of stable spinsanionen and to control their spin states.
