Spetseffekt is a term used in some Scandinavian languages to describe the practice of creating deliberate, visually spectacular phenomena for film, television, theatre, and live events. In English, the closest equivalent is “special effects.” The word is occasionally seen as an alternative spelling or regional variant of specialeffekt in Swedish and Norwegian texts, or as a calque from German Spezialeffekt.

Techniques encompassed by spetsffekt include practical effects such as pyrotechnics, mechanical rigs, prosthetics, makeup, models, and animatronics, as well as optical effects created in-camera. Digital methods—visual effects, CGI, compositing, motion capture—are commonly integrated with practical effects. Sound design and editing also contribute to the perceived impact of a spetsffekt sequence.

Production use and workflow: An effects supervisor plans sequences, drafts safety assessments, and coordinates with cinematography, stunts, and art departments. Safety regulations govern the use of pyrotechnics and rigging. The field has evolved from purely practical effects to blended workflows that combine real-world effects with post-production enhancements, enabling greater control and safety.
