Spalting is the discoloration of wood caused by certain fungi that create contrasting pigments and distinctive dark lines, known as zone lines, as the fungi grow and interact with the wood fibers. The word spaltinger is formed from spalting plus the English agent suffix -er and is used mainly in hobbyist and craft circles.
