Spaltinger

Spaltinger is a term used in woodworking and mycology to describe either a piece of wood that shows spalting coloration or a person who induces spalting in wood. Spalting is the discoloration of wood caused by certain fungi that create contrasting pigments and distinctive dark lines, known as zone lines, as the fungi grow and interact with the wood fibers. The word spaltinger is formed from spalting plus the English agent suffix -er and is used mainly in hobbyist and craft circles.

A spaltinger wood piece is valued for its decorative effect, which can include a range of colors and the characteristic network of zone lines. The patterns depend on wood species, fungal species, moisture, and temperature. In natural settings spalting occurs when fallen wood remains in damp conditions, allowing fungal colonization. In modern craft practice, some woodworkers attempt to control spalting by inoculating wood with selected fungal strains under controlled environmental conditions to influence pattern development, though outcomes can vary and safety considerations apply.
