Application and technique play a crucial role in results. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and slightly roughened to improve adhesion. The product is applied with a putty knife or trowel, typically in thin layers. Limitations and alternatives are important to consider. Spackels are non-structural fillers and are not suitable for large structural repairs. They can shrink or crack if applied too thickly or exposed to movement or moisture. For large gaps, patching mortars or specialized exterior fillers may be required, and for drywall joints, joint compound or tape is often used in conjunction with spackels.
