Spachtelputz is a decorative plaster finish used on interior walls, predominantly in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other Central European countries. It consists of a cement- or lime-based plaster layer that is applied in a thin coat and then smoothed or textured with a steel trowel or spatula. The technique yields a uniform, durable surface with a fine to coarse granular texture, depending on the aggregate size and application method. It is often applied as a top layer over a base coat on masonry, concrete, or drywall with appropriate substrate preparation.

In its traditional form, spachtelputz is produced with mineral aggregates such as sand and a binder like cement or lime, sometimes with polymer modifiers to improve adhesion and elasticity. After curing, the surface can be left as a flat, semi-gloss finish or finished with a variety of textures, including fine stippling or a more pronounced “knock” pattern. High-grade varieties exist for lime-based systems, offering breathability and compatibility with historic walls.

Variants include Feinspachtelputz (fine) and Grobspachtelputz (coarse), which differ in the particle size of the aggregate and resulting texture. Spachtelputz is valued for its ability to conceal minor wall imperfections and its resistance to wear, though the finish can be less forgiving of structural movement and may require skilled workmanship.

In modern construction, spachtelputz is often used to achieve a traditional or durable decorative surface and can be repainted or reworked without removing the underlying plaster.
