Sosialidemokraatit, commonly referring to the Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (SDP), are one of Finland’s oldest and largest political parties. Founded in 1899 as a workers’ party, the SDP has long been rooted in the Finnish labour movement and in the principles of social democracy. The party promotes a Nordic-style welfare state, social justice, an inclusive economy with a strong public sector, robust workers’ rights, progressive taxation, and equal opportunities. It supports European integration and international cooperation as means to advance social and economic goals. The SDP positions itself on the center-left of the political spectrum and works through democratic processes to pursue reform.

Historically, the SDP has played a central role in Finnish politics, frequently participating in government and shaping welfare and labour policy. It has experienced internal reform and moments of political realignment, including shifts during the late 20th century toward more centrist positions while maintaining core social-democratic values. In Europe, the SDP is a member of the Party of European Socialists and, at the parliamentary level, aligns with the S&D group. The party has been part of several governing coalitions in the postwar era and remains a significant force in national and local elections.

Organization and representation: The party is led by a chairperson elected at a party congress and organized through regional associations, with youth and women's wings. It holds seats in the Finnish Parliament and in local councils. The Sosialidemokraatit advocate policies aimed at strengthening the welfare state, education, health care, and climate action, and seek to advance social equity within Finland and in the European Union.
