Sombrilla is the name for a shading device designed to protect from sun, and sometimes light rain, by means of a fabric canopy supported by a central pole and ribs. The canopy is usually circular or polygonal and is mounted on a base or anchored to the ground. Sombrillas are used in outdoor spaces such as beaches, patios, cafes, and gardens, and can be portable or fixed.

Etymology and usage vary by region. The term comes from sombra, meaning shade, with the diminutive suffix -illa. In many Spanish-speaking countries, sombrilla primarily refers to a sunshade or beach umbrella, while paraguas is more commonly used for a rain umbrella, though regional usage can differ and some areas use sombrilla for rain protection as well.

Varieties and design. Sombrillas include beach umbrellas, patio or terraza sombrillas, and market or outdoor cafe versions. They can be manual or crank-operated, and some tilt or rotate to follow the sun. They range from small handheld models to large structures, sometimes with tilting mechanisms to adjust angle against sun or rain. Materials commonly used are UV-treated canvases or synthetic fabrics such as polyester or acrylic, supported by frames made of wood, aluminum, steel, or fiberglass. Bases may be heavy, such as concrete or weighted stands, to provide stability in wind.

Care and maintenance. To maximize longevity, sombrillas should be dried after exposure to moisture, stored in a dry place during off-season, and inspected for wear on the fabric and ribs. Clean the canopy with mild soap and water, and replace the fabric when faded or torn. Proper anchoring and wind-aware use help prevent damage in storms.
