somHilbert

SomHilbert is a term used to describe a family of self-organizing map–like models that operate within a Hilbert space framework. It denotes the idea of mapping data into a (potentially infinite‑dimensional) Hilbert space in order to exploit the geometry of inner products, while preserving a topological structure similar to that of a traditional self‑organizing map (SOM). The concept appears in discussions that seek to combine topographic mapping with kernel methods or feature embeddings.

Construction and formulation

In somHilbert, data x belong to an input space X and are associated with a feature map φ: X → H into a Hilbert space H. A finite set of prototypes W = {m_i} ⊂ H is arranged on a lattice to define the map topology. For a given input x, the best matching unit is chosen by minimizing the distance in H: c = argmin_i ||φ(x) − m_i||_H. Prototypes are updated as m_i ← m_i + η(t) h_{ci}(t) [φ(x) − m_i] for all i in the neighborhood of c, where η(t) is a learning rate and h_{ci}(t) is a neighborhood function. If the feature map φ is not explicitly known, the kernel trick can be used: inner products are computed via a kernel k(x, x') corresponding to ⟨φ(x), φ(x')⟩_H, enabling distance calculations and updates in terms of k.

SomHilbert generalizes classical SOMs by allowing nonlinear representations through φ and by leveraging kernel methods. When φ is the identity and H is a finite-dimensional Euclidean space, somHilbert recovers a standard SOM.
