Soluvälitila, in Finnish biology, refers to the space between cells within a tissue or organ. It is the extracellular compartment that surrounds cells and consists of interstitial fluid and an extracellular matrix of proteins and polysaccharides. The properties of soluvälitila vary by tissue and organism and are essential for diffusion, signaling, and mechanical support.

In animals, the soluvälitila is largely filled by extracellular fluid, commonly called interstitial fluid, which bathes cells with water, ions, nutrients, and waste. The extracellular matrix, composed of collagen, elastin, and glycoproteins, provides structural scaffolding and regulates cell behavior. Soluble signaling molecules, such as hormones and cytokines, travel through this space to reach target cells.

In plants, the analogous space is often referred to as the apoplast and includes the cell walls and the intercellular air spaces. It facilitates diffusion of water and dissolved nutrients, and contributes to gas exchange in leaves. The plasmodesmata connect cytoplasms of adjacent cells, allowing selective transport and signaling between cells while solute movement also occurs through the apoplast.

Understanding soluvälitila is important in physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Changes in the volume or composition of the extracellular space, such as edema or tumor stroma formation, can affect tissue function. Researchers study soluvälitila with tracers, imaging, and markers of extracellular matrix to understand diffusion, mechanical properties, and cell–matrix interactions.
