Softboxen are a type of photographic lighting modifier designed to produce soft, even illumination by diffusing the light from a source such as a strobe, continuous light, or LED panel. The device consists of a fabric-covered, light-tight enclosure with a reflective interior surface, and a front diffusion panel that reduces harsh shadows. The light enters, reflects off the interior, and passes through diffusion fabric, resulting in a broad, evenly lit area. The front can be plain diffusion fabric or include a grid to narrow the beam.

Softboxen come in various shapes and sizes, including square, rectangular, strip, and octagonal (often called octabox).
