Strobes, or strobe lights, are devices that emit brief, intense pulses of light designed to illuminate a scene only for a fraction of a second. The rapid flashing can make fast motion appear frozen or slowed, depending on the flash rate relative to the motion. The concept has roots in the 19th century and matured with the advent of electronic flash tubes and LED technology.

A typical strobe consists of a light source (often xenon flash tube or high-intensity LED), a trigger or control circuit, and a housing with a power supply. Pulse duration can range from microseconds to a few milliseconds, and pulse frequency from a few hertz to hundreds of hertz. Photographers use strobes in studios or on location; in stage and event lighting they provide intense, brief bursts for dynamic effects. Modern systems often include wireless triggering and adjustable color temperature or RGB output for creative control.

Applications include photography and filmmaking to freeze action, stage lighting for dramatic effects, and industrial or scientific use in stroboscopic measurement. In stroboscopic measurement, flashing synchronized with a moving object allows visualization of speed, rotation, or vibration, aiding analysis and troubleshooting.

Safety considerations are important. Strobe effects can trigger seizures in individuals with photosensitive epilepsy and may cause headaches or migraines in others. Adequate warnings, controlled exposure, and avoidance in sensitive environments are advised. Operators should follow manufacturer guidelines and relevant safety standards to minimize risk while maintaining intended visual effects.
