Snowshoeing is a winter activity that involves walking over snow with snowshoes strapped to the feet. The devices distribute weight over a larger surface area, preventing excessive sinking in soft snow and enabling travel on trails, open terrain, or backcountry terrain that might be difficult in regular boots.

Snowshoes have a long history, developed by Indigenous peoples of North America and communities in northern Eurasia to traverse deep winter snow. Traditional designs were wooden frames with rawhide lashings. In the 19th and 20th centuries, metal, aluminum, and synthetic materials, along with modern bindings, improved durability and performance, expanding snowshoeing into recreational use and guided tours.

Equipment commonly includes snowshoes sized to the user’s weight and snow conditions, bindings that secure the boot, trekking poles with snow baskets, and insulated winter footwear. Clothing and layers should suit cold, wet conditions, with waterproof outerwear and moisture-wicking base layers. In backcountry settings, avalanche gear and navigation tools become essential.

Techniques focus on balance, weight distribution, and efficient movement. Beginners typically keep weight on the midfoot, take short, deliberate steps, and use poles for stability. Uphill travel can use stepping or kick-stepping techniques, while downhill movement requires controlled speed, wide stance, and careful foot placement.

Safety and access considerations include weather, daylight, and terrain choices. Backcountry participants should have avalanche awareness and, where appropriate, carry beacon, shovel, and probe. Respect for trails and environment, including staying on designated routes and packing out waste, helps preserve winter landscapes for future use. Snowshoeing offers low-impact cardio and accessibility for a wide range of ages and fitness levels.
