Snimatelji, in film and television, are professionals responsible for capturing images. They function as the director of photography (DP), translating the director’s vision into photographic images. Their work encompasses camera selection, framing, composition, lighting design, exposure control, and camera movement.

They collaborate with the director, production designer, and lighting team. They plan shots, develop the visual style, decide on lenses, filters, and camera accessories; supervise the camera department, including focus pullers and operators; sometimes operate the camera themselves. They ensure continuity of lighting and color between takes and scenes.

Technically, snimatelji work with digital cinema cameras or film stock, and with lighting gear. They design lighting schemes to support mood, time of day, and narrative emphasis; manage exposure, color temperature, and dynamic range; coordinate with the colorist in post-production for color grading. They use tools and practices such as shutter angle, frame rate, movement devices (dolly, crane, Steadicam, gimbal), and sometimes drone footage.

Education and career: Many become snimatelji through film schools or apprenticeships. A strong reel or portfolio is essential. Career paths often begin as camera assistants or operators, advancing to DP with experience and proven collaboration.

In many languages of the region, including Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Slovenian, the term snimatelj/snimatelji refers to the cinematographer; the international term is director of photography (DoP). The role is central to the visual storytelling of film and television productions.
