Formation and structure: The sneeuwbed forms as snowfall accumulates and the overlying snow compresses. Through pressure, temperature gradients, and moisture exchange with the ground, the basal layer undergoes metamorphism, producing a range of grain types from fine, rounded grains to depth hoar crystals in some conditions. Ground heat and contact with soil or rock can influence its temperature regime and moisture content, sometimes leading to melt-freeze features near the interface.

Properties: The basal layer typically has different density and temperature compared with upper layers. It may be wetter due to heat transfer from the ground, or it can develop crusts and weak zones as melting and refreezing occur at the base.
